N 497 shunts at Newport yard looking towards Williamstown, circa 1961.
This yard marshalled trains to and from Geelong to the North East and Bendigo lines thus avoiding the congested Melbourne yard. With the construction of the Brooklyn to Tottenham connection (opened Feb 1965) this yard became redundant virtually overnight, from then until its ultimate demise in the 1980's it was mainly used as a storage yard for Newport shops and wagons waiting to make the one way trip to Simsmetal. Its last operating use was for Spotswood oil pilots reversing enroute to and from Tottenham yard.
