To allow for increased tonnage on the Bolangum branch, two short sections of the line were re-laid with heavier rail, and an increased speed of 5 miles per hour allowed on these sections. One section between 190 miles and 191½ miles included Burrum siding. The heavier rail enabled an up train to top up to a full load at Burrum, set back to the 191½ mile mark, ascend the 1 in 200 gradient, then the 1 in 100 Burrum Bank. The gradient eased off at 190 miles and allowed the heavier load to be hauled to Lubeck. The other section re-laid was between Bolangum and Marnoo, from 202½ to 203½ miles. This did not involve a standing start from a siding. It was a rise for up trains from Anderson Creek. The ARE Supplementary Diagrams to the VR 1927 Gradients & Curves Book shows the gradient from Anderson Creek to be a VC (vertical curve), increasing to 1 in 60. (Ross Jepson)
