1928 Country Passenger timetables

Putting these pages together has been a most pleasureable experience. With a little imagination it has been like stepping into a time machine. Oh what I'd give to be a person of means with a decent camera and an "all lines" ticket. in 1928! As can be seen reading through the timetable practically every line had a pasenger service of some sort, the only line without one was the Stawell to Grampians line and, as can be seen on the map, the VR had already lost interest in the Wenslydale line as the map has a notation next to it simply saying "unused" even though its official closure date was not until 1948. The internal combustion engine as well as the building of an extensive road system are known as "progress" but unless you have a car most of the destinations in this timetable are unreachable now. Unlike the happy days in 1928 when you could catch a train to almost any station on the Victorian Railways system.
Many thanks to Chris Wurr for making this timetable available to scan. |
