As more bogie wheat hoppers were built the number of GY's was reduced by recoding some to G for general (non bulk grain) traffic, the original GY number was retained. The use of the letter G could be considered a mistake as the letter G had formerly been used to denote a bulk grain wagon (GZ, GY, GJF etc) At first the wagon was simply painted with a brown diagonal stripe (as shown above) but as the wagons were shopped they were painted in the usual VR wagon red (as shown below)
