Throughout the 60's and 70's VR saw continuing increases in timber traffic from the Eastern district. The IS class were KT wagons that were lengthened to increase carrying capacity.
IS 1 seems to have been the guinea pig for this project, it was a standard IA wagon that was lengthened |

This stretched IA was the prototype for the IS conversions, curiously the doors were not removed.
